Bangladesh Court Sentences Two Policemen to Death Over Student Killing

(MENAFN) A court in Bangladesh on Thursday handed death sentences to two police officers for the killing of Abu Sayed, a university student, on the eve of the 2024 uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-2, presided over by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict, according to reports.

Sayed was shot by police on July 16, 2024, while protesting an attack on fellow students at Begum Rokeya University in the northern Rangpur district. Witnesses said he stood with his arms outstretched in front of officers before being fired upon at close range.

Video and photographic evidence of the incident circulated widely on social media, fueling nationwide protests on university campuses.

The two officers sentenced to death were former assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy, both currently in custody.

In addition, three other policemen were sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity related to the killing. All three remain at large.

Among the remaining 25 accused, sentences varied. Former Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Md. Hasibur Rashid received 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and is also currently absconding.
