You’re invited: Unlock the past at the restored Spring Valley Schoolhouse

A one-room schoolhouse that once anchored community life in Larkspur is opening its doors again. 

Join Douglas County from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, for a ribbon-cutting and public open house celebrating the newly restored Spring Valley Schoolhouse. 

Visitors can explore the restored building and learn how it served generations of students while becoming a center of community life. Docents from the Larkspur Historical Society will be on site to share the history of the property and the Spring Valley area beginning in 1865. 

The event is part of Douglas County’s ongoing series of exhibits, events and ribbon cuttings commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th birthday this year. Together, these celebrations highlight the people, places and stories that shaped our nation, state and local communities. 

Dating to the 1800s, the Spring Valley Schoolhouse educated generations of children and hosted community gatherings. After the building became a private residence in the 1970s, restoration work returned it to its original one-room character through structural improvements, updated finishes and the removal of residential additions, including the second story. 

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the schoolhouse remains an important connection to the heritage of rural Douglas County.
