Grassley to Host Seventh Federal Judiciary Youth Summit in Des Moines for High School Students

BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will host his seventh Federal Judiciary Youth Summit on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the U.S. District Courthouse in Des Moines.

“While the executive and legislative branches spend more time in the limelight, the federal judiciary’s actions can impact decades, even centuries, of American life,” Grassley said. “I’m pleased to announce my seventh Federal Judiciary Youth Summit, which will provide Iowa high school students a behind-the-scenes look at the federal judiciary and a unique opportunity to speak with a U.S. district judge and a U.S. attorney about their work to uphold Americans’ constitutional freedoms. I look forward to our discussion this fall.”

The summit will feature speakers from both sides of the Southern District of Iowa’s courtroom: U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger and U.S. Attorney David Waterman. Grassley recommended both Ebinger and Waterman to their roles and helped secure their confirmations as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

The event will start with a welcome reception followed by a question-and-answer session. Invitations have been sent to 78 area high schools. Each school is allowed to bring four juniors or seniors, accompanied by one teacher.

Background:

Grassley has served on the Judiciary Committee since he was first elected to the U.S. Senate. He continually advocates for civic engagement and appreciation of the nation’s system of checks and balances. Under Grassley’s leadership in the 119th Congress, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced 141 of President Trump’s nominees, including 11 circuit judges, 46 district judges, one Court of International Trade judge, 48 U.S. attorneys and 12 U.S. marshals. Among these 141 nominees, four are Iowans.
