UNESCO and Partners Launch Literacy Programme to Expand Learning Opportunities in Aroma, Kassala
Speaking at the launch, Mr Junaid Sorosh-Wali reaffirmed UNESCO's commitment to working alongside national authorities and communities to ensure that learning opportunities extend beyond formal schooling and reach people throughout their lives.
“Education should not end with the classroom or be limited by age. Through literacy and adult learning, we can give more people the knowledge and skills to participate in their communities, improve their opportunities and contribute to Sudan's recovery and development.” said Mr Junaid
The Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, represented by Ms Azza Ahmed, also emphasised the importance of sustained cooperation between national and state institutions, UNESCO and other partners to ensure that adult education initiatives are maintained and expanded.
At the local level, Mr Montaser Abdel Fattah, Executive Director of Rural Aroma Locality, reaffirmed the locality's support for the programme and its readiness to facilitate its implementation, underscoring the importance of local ownership to its success.
The launch in Aroma marks another step in UNESCO's efforts to restore and expand learning opportunities in Sudan, particularly for communities affected by conflict, displacement and longstanding barriers to education.
By working with education authorities, community leaders and local institutions, UNESCO is supporting approaches that place literacy, lifelong learning and community participation at the heart of recovery, helping ensure that education reaches not only children and young people, but adults and communities as a whole.
