Friday evening was a crisp and clear night with the beginning of the harvest moon shining above the Rockingham County Shiloh Airport in Stoneville, NC. The crowd rolled in as the darkness blanketed the airport and the cool air fell down to the tarmac. The big 15-foot screen was illuminated with the Civil Air Patrol promotional video…to set the mood and tempo for the evening.
Lieutenant Paul Patterson has spent the better part of 8 years visiting the Arizona desert to camp and image the skies, three times per year, with a multitude of different telescopes. His images reach back into the past to capture the stars, moons and constellations of deep space. He was excited to share these images and stories with the cadets of the Dan River Composite Squadron and the forty-or-so members of the community that showed up Friday night.
The evening consisted of a thirty-minute presentation of some video and images that were shown on the big screen while Lt Patterson narrated and brought them to life with his experiences capturing them. Later, everyone was invited to look through the telescope and view Saturn and its rings! The night moon was bright and hampered some of the imaging, but everyone was excited for what was revealed. Lt Patterson stated, “I had the pleasure of talking with many of the guests who not only enjoyed seeing my Astro images and looking through my telescope at Saturn and the Moon but also conveying that CAP incorporates aerospace education for the cadets. For many, it was their first time looking through a telescope.”
Friday’s event was three-fold for the squadron, first serving as an aerospace outreach event, second, they set up a recruiting tent that spread CAP’s message and how to come visit the squadron, and lastly the squadron received three Celestron telescopes as part of a STEM kit and this was the culmination of the STEM evaluation. A success on all fronts!
