Pres Ali calls for teachers to remain at the heart of education transformation

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has called for teachers to remain at the centre of Guyana’s evolving education landscape, as artificial intelligence and emerging technologies redefine how knowledge is delivered, assessed and understood.

In a message on Monday to mark World Teachers’ Day 2026, the head of state expressed his appreciation to educators, past and present, for their contribution to the development of Guyana’s children and the nation.

He said the classroom is changing rapidly, with smart classrooms, digital technologies, online resources and artificial intelligence becoming increasingly integrated into the learning process.

While recognising the opportunities these developments create, President Ali pointed to the new demands they place on educators, particularly as artificial intelligence changes how knowledge is accessed and produced.

He said AI can support teachers in preparing lessons, developing educational materials, adapting instruction to individual needs and creating more engaging learning experiences.

However, the president maintained that technology cannot replace the human qualities that define effective teaching.

He said the wisdom, judgement, empathy and understanding of educators remain critical, particularly in recognising a student’s potential, encouraging those who struggle and helping children overcome challenges.

The growing use of AI also presents new considerations for student assessment, President Ali said, as teachers must determine whether submitted work reflects a student’s own understanding and effort.

He said the response should not be to reject technology, but to equip young people with the ability to use it responsibly, ethically and intelligently.

“This requires us to rethink not only how we assess learning, but what learning means in an age of artificial intelligence,” the president said.

He said preparing students for this changing environment must be matched by strengthening the capacity of teachers through continuous professional development.

President Ali reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to training, professional development and resources to equip educators with the knowledge and skills required for the classroom of the future.

He also pointed to commitments aimed at improving teachers’ welfare, including better pay, improved allowances, grants to support teaching and learning, expanded training opportunities and measures to strengthen morale.

The president urged teachers to continue educating, empowering and inspiring the next generation, while shaping character and contributing to the development of the Guyana of tomorrow.

He extended his appreciation and best wishes to teachers across the country, saying, “May God bless all of you!”
